If your weekly practice sessions feel more like a random warm-up buffet than a focused game plan, you’re not alone. I’ve been there—half-heartedly hitting balls on the range, watching them sail (or slice), and wondering if I was actually getting better. Spoiler: I wasn’t.
That’s why I built this: a weekly golf practice plan that doesn’t just fill time—it builds skills, tracks progress, and keeps your game moving forward even when life’s busy.
This is my personal system—tested, adjusted, and intentionally repeatable. It works for league players, weekend warriors, and any golfer trying to break out of the ‘hit and hope’ cycle. Here’s how it’s structured.
Foundations First: My Practice Priorities
Every week, my practice time is built around four foundations:
- Contact: The core of a solid swing. If I’m not striking the ball cleanly, nothing else matters.
- Function: Can I execute the kind of shot the hole demands? This means shaping the ball (a little), controlling trajectory, and using the right club for the job.
- Feel: Short game, tempo, and distance control all live here. This is where I tune in to finesse and feedback.
- Finish: Not just how the swing ends—but how it holds up. Balance, posture, and the ability to repeat it.
Every drill and session should touch at least two of these. If not, it’s probably just exercise—not practice.
The Weekly Layout
Here’s how my week is structured during the season:
Day | Focus | Notes |
---|---|---|
Monday | League Round – Fellows Creek | Real course data. I note what’s working (and not). |
Tuesday | Full Practice: Range + Short Game | 90-minute structured session. |
Wednesday | Backyard Short Game Practice | Controlled, specific work (chips, pitches). |
Thursday | League Round – U of M Course | Another 9 holes of testing under pressure. |
Friday | Short Game Practice + Gym Recovery | Lighter effort, often barefoot. |
Saturday | Range Session: Tempo & Mechanics | Focused full swing work. |
Sunday | Practice Round – New Course | Always a discovery day. |
This structure is flexible but intentional. If I miss a day, I adjust—not abandon.
Key Session Types
🟢 Range Session (90 mins)
- 15 min putting
- 30 min short game (pitches, bump-and-runs, bunker work)
- 45 min full swing
See my Range Session Breakdown post for drill ideas.
🟣 Backyard Short Game Practice (60 mins)
- Setup station with targets
- Use the BLT chipping system
- Emphasis on tempo + first chip success
🟡 Course Rounds (9–18 Holes)
- Track stats: FIR, GIR, Putts, Up & Downs
- Note mental game tags and club confidence
My Practice Principles
- No Zombie Sessions
If I’m just hitting balls without feedback or purpose, I stop. - Start Small
I begin most sessions with putting or chipping. Grounded rhythm first, then power. - Break and Reflect
Every 10–15 minutes, I pause. Log notes. Reset focus. - Use Routines
My G.R.A.C.E. pre-shot routine for full swings and See it. Feel it. Trust it. Roll it. for putting are baked into every rep. - Play With the Lie
I practice uphill, downhill, rough, sand—because that’s real golf.
The Weekly Game Plan Template
Each week, I prep a “Game Plan” that lays out which skills I’ll work on and which drills I’ll use. I also look ahead at weather, gym recovery, and travel. Want to build your own? The downloadable planner is coming soon.
