Practicing Tempo Over Technique
“Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.” – Golf wisdom, military wisdom, and now my new swing thought.
⛳ The Pivot
I’ve spent a lot of time on technique lately—drills, checkpoints, mirror work. And while all of that is valuable, my swing has started to feel like a checklist more than a motion. So this week, I shifted focus: no new mechanics, no video breakdowns. Just one goal—get into a tempo I can trust.
🎯 The Why
Tempo isn’t just feel-good fluff—it’s the glue between mechanics. A swing that’s technically sound but rushed falls apart under pressure. And when I’m on the course thinking “don’t overswing,” I need a baseline I can return to.
🛠️ The Plan
I built this week’s range sessions around three tempo checkpoints:
-
Backswing patience – Slower takeaway to eliminate the snatchy move I default to under nerves.
-
Transition softness – Letting the club “settle” at the top instead of yanking down.
-
Through-swing rhythm – Finishing in balance instead of firing at the ball.
I also used the 1-2 count trick—thinking “one” on the backswing, “two” through impact. It feels silly, but it works. My swing smooths out, and the ball actually goes straighter, not shorter. I take a deep breath on the backswing and exhale on the downswing. I’ll save the why and how on that for a later post.
🧠 Mental Note
When I stopped obsessing over getting into positions and just committed to rhythm, my confidence grew. Tempo gave me something to feel, not just fix.
📌 Takeaway
If your swing feels forced or robotic, try practicing tempo instead of technique for a bit. You might be surprised how much your body remembers when your brain gets out of the way.
Tagline for this lesson:
“Tempo isn’t timing—it’s trust. Let the club do the work.”
