- No pars. No greens in regulation. One fairway hit. And still — one of the most grounded, honest golf rounds I’ve played this season.
Sometimes improvement doesn’t show up on the scorecard.
Sometimes, it’s everything behind the numbers.

What the Scorecard Missed
🟣 I Missed the Fairway — Barely
I only hit one fairway. But every single tee shot was playable. Most of my misses were just a foot or two into the rough — and I counted them honestly. No “close enough” calls.
Even though I only hit one fairway, I feel good knowing my tee shots were still playable — and that matters. Golfers who hit fairways are about 15% more likely to hit greens in regulation (MyGolfSpy), and missing the fairway by just a few feet still costs roughly 0.29 strokes per hole on average (SwingU). Luckily, my lies were manageable — and smart chipping helped me save bogey more than once.
There’s something satisfying about playing a full round where every shot matters, even when the numbers don’t flatter you.
Not in the trees. Not in trouble. Still not a fairway.
🟢 I Made the Smart Choice
I didn’t chase hero shots. I laid up when I needed to. I stayed away from sand and water. My contact wasn’t great — especially off the tee — but my decisions were.
Played smart.
Laid up with purpose.
Never spiraled.
That’s a big shift for me.
🧠 I Committed to My Routine
I stuck to my GAPS routine on every shot, even under pressure. I was the first to tee off in my league group and had a dozen people watching. Nerves showed up — but so did the work I’ve been doing.
My post-shot routine really helped me keep my head in the game, and on the next shot.
I didn’t play my best. But I didn’t spiral either. And that’s progress.
The Group Vibe
I played with Becky (my cart mate), Sue, and Sue’s robotic pushcart, Isabella — who might’ve had the best dance moves on the course. The energy was light, and we had some solid laughs — especially after I hit a branch and accidentally pinged Becky in the head with a ricocheted chip (she’s fine, thank goodness).
We joked our way through the round — from mistaken starter signals (“Was that a thumbs up or an FU?”) to slow groups and overly ambitious layups. It made the evening better, even when my game wasn’t sharp.
Honest Golf > Perfect Golf
I didn’t make any pars.
I didn’t find any greens in regulation.
But I didn’t blow up either. I stayed present, made good decisions, and played real golf.
I walked off the course feeling more confident than when I walked on.
Didn’t play my best.
Didn’t spiral either.
That’s progress.
